Overview

NITI Aayog is the nodal institution for achieving SDGs in the country, leading the 2030 Agenda with the spirit of cooperative and competitive federalism. It monitors the performance of States/UTs through the SDG India Index, North-Eastern Region District SDG Index, Multidimensional Poverty Index, promotes SDG localisation, and encourages a competitive spirit among States and UTs. The SDG India Index Report, released by NITI Aayog, monitors the performance of all States and UTs, benchmarking them based on their overall achievements across various goals. While some States and UTs have made significant strides in specific SDG areas, others continue to address critical developmental gaps. By highlighting these disparities, the index supports targeted interventions and fosters both competition and collaboration to expedite SDG achievement nationwide.

NITI Aayog has also launched the North-Eastern Region District SDG Index, which monitors the performance of districts across the eight northeastern states, offering granular insights to inform localized policy and planning efforts.

Further, the National Multidimensional Poverty Index released by NITI Aayog also plays a pivotal role in assessing advancements towards target 1.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aims at reducing “at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions”. The Index provides State, Union Territory, and District-level data on proportion of population in multidimensional poverty, enabling governments to formulate and tailor policies and schemes accordingly.
