Tourism and Culture
Overview
The Tourism Division provides strategic and directional guidance to the Central and State Governments for the development of the tourism sector. The Division works for developing India into the most preferred destination for tourists through the development of responsible and sustainable tourism policies, focusing on niche tourism, ecotourism and wellness tourism, infrastructure development, capacity development and increasing tourist footfalls. The Culture Division seeks to develop, preserve and promote India’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage, with a greater policy and planning coherence in the sector.
Core Functions

Policy Formulation at National and State Levels

The Tourism and Culture Division regularly reviews and analyses strategies and policies for tourism and culture development at the national and state levels and provides directional inputs. The Division provides policy suggestions and takes a lead role in new policy formulation for the two sectors. The Division coordinates with the Ministries/ Departments in the matters of Culture and Tourism. The Division also provides support in preparation of Vision Document, Strategy Document and Action Plans for the Tourism & Culture sector.  

Project Analysis and Project Evaluation

  • Appraisal of memorandums/ project proposals prepared by the Ministry of Tourism & Ministry of Culture for Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC)/ Standing Finance Committee (SFC) relating to various Central Sector and Centrally Sponsored Schemes being implemented by the Ministry
  • Appraisal of Notes prepared by the Ministry of Tourism & Ministry of Culture for the Cabinet for CCEA approval
  • Appraisal of projects proposed for implementation with external assistance received from the States/ Ministry of Tourism & Ministry of Culture
  • Examination of feasibility reports, master plans and research study reports
  • Providing inputs/comments on the outcome/output budget of the Ministry of Tourism & Ministry of Culture covering Central Sector and Centrally Sponsored Schemes
  • Representing NITI Aayog in various Committees/Groups etc. set up by the Ministry of Tourism & Ministry of Culture pertaining to tourism and culture sectors.  

Research Studies

The Division publishes concept papers and research articles, and conducts studies pertaining to the tourism and culture sector.  

Stakeholder Consultations

The Division holds regular stakeholder consultations with eminent experts from the industry, academia and civil society organisations to understand issues and concerns of various stakeholders pertaining to the tourism and culture sector.
