The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2016, in its 9th edition this year, is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, an agency of the United Nations).
Post the launch of the GII 2015 report, a conscious effort has been made by the Government of India to look into the methodology and data points of GII, and take corrective measures to improve the overall ranking of India in the report. Due to these measures the rank of India in GII 2016 has increased from 81 in GII 2015 to 66 in GII 2016.
NITI Aayog is in turn looking into the data sources under Innovation linkages, which corresponds with Indian R&D data. In this connection NITI Aayog has scheduled a workshop involving the concerned Departments in Government of India to inter-alia discuss the issues involved in collection of the data pertaining to the index. This exercise will also help to reflect upon some of the data gaps faced by the concerned Ministries/Departments.
The workshop is scheduled at 12th September 2016 at 3.00 pm in committee room no. 122, NITI Aayog and will be chaired by Shri. Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog. Shri Shailendra Sigdel, Statistical Advisor for South Asia, UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), UNESCO is the speaker for this workshop and representatives of WIPO will join via video conference.
